Data Recovery Wizard Review
Pros: Very easy for home and small business users, effective in most data recovery applications, extensive product set, moderate help support, moderately easy downloads, reasonably priced.
Cons: Good at searching for one file type or all file types, not good at searching for 2 or 3 file types as it doesn't allow a selection box per file type. Does not support RAID drive configurations (RAID-5 support available in Professional edition - $89.95).
Easy to Use: 9 out of 10
Easy to use for most of its feature set and a very simple user interface appropriate for novice computer users. Data Recovery Wizard does possess a few nuances that lowered our grade of the software.
The software was not as easy to manipulate as our best in class reviews - we were unable to select multiple file types to search for. We either had to search for all file types or one file type, nothing in the middle. This is due to the file type using a "drop-down" box versus a selection box, thus limiting our selection to one file type at a time. If searching for a Microsoft Excel document, it gives multiple Excel selections, which must be made one at a time versus simply selecting all Excel options.
At first, the navigation of this data recovery software is somewhat confusing if you do not know the file name you are looking for. However, once you get familiar with the software and get to know the system, you are able to select file types (see full list at bottom of screen), date modified, file size and much more. We liked the ability to view the search results as thumbnails, which made finding specific photos much quicker.
Other than the few limitations, this software is very solid.
Recovery Effectiveness: 9.4 out of 10
Data Recovery Wizard is highly effective at recovering files in home and small business applications. While slower than some we have tested, we found every file we searched for and then some and it is actually more comprehensive at its search process than others. (No software gets a 10 out of 10 in this regard as when put through the paces after a multiple-pass data wipe, very few software systems are able to recover any traces of files.)
Broadness of Feature Set: 9.1 out of 10
The software covers most normal data and file recovery uses (FAT, NTFS). It does not perform RAID recoveries (RAID-5 recovery available on Professional edition - $99.95) and is not available for Mac. It is able to recover files even after they are deleted from the recycle bin and is completely automated. This system makes up for its slightly "off" searching user friendliness by offering the most robust search available in DIY data recovery software.
Searching Capabilities: 9.6 out of 10
The data recovery software lacks the ability to perform RAID recovery. If you don't need to worry about that, then this system is probably appropriate. The system does not alter the contents of the drive being searched, which means you can search with confidence knowing you will not be altering the original data while searching.
As a summary, the software offers the ability to search for lost music, deleted photos, accidentally erased Word documents, and generally most other files (see full list of files Data Recovery Wizard will search for at the bottom of this page).

The software offers a fairly reliable and robust "help" function, and there is a well-developed online FAQ available, and further queries are handled via email. Very well-developed support network.
System Compatability: 8.8 out of 10
The Data Recovery Wizard supports the following file systems:
- FAT12 (used by DOS and Windows on floppy disks and some small-sized media like Compact Flash cards for digital cameras)
- FAT16 (used by DOS and Windows for partitions less than 2 gigabytes in size)
- FAT32 (used by Windows for bigger partitions)
- NTFS (used by Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista)
- EXT2 (used by Linux/UNIX Operating System)
- EXT3 (used by Linux/UNIX Operating System)
The Data Recovery Wizard works on all Windows-based computers.
Download Speed: 8.9 out of 10
Upon purchase, system is ready to use in under 5 minutes. Some caution is required during the download process - try to download in one sitting as a zip file is first unzipped, and then the software Setup file is placed in a folder. That Setup file must be double-clicked on in order to complete the installation. Slightly cumbersome but easily navigatable for even a novice computer user.
Value for Price: 9.2 out of 10
There are less expensive data recovery systems out there, but this system is very robust and near the top of the class for its intelligent search abilities.

Specifically Supported Device Types
The Data Recovery Wizard can be used to recover data from the following types of devices:
- IDE HDD
- USB HDD
- SCSI HDD
- SATA HDD
- Fire Wire HDD
- Floppy drive
- Dynamic disk, there are five types of Dynamic volumes: Simple Volume, Striped Volume, Spanned Volume, Mirrored Volume, and RAID-5 Volume (Only supported by professional version).
- Compact Flash cards and other disk-like media that use a FAT/NTFS file system and EXT2/EXT3 file system to store files and folders.
The following files types are specifically supported by Recover My Files Version 4.2. Please check the latest available version for an up to date file listing.
Minimum system requirements for the Host Computer:
Available Space for Installation: The minimum of the space for installing the Data Recovery Wizard is 32 MB.
Operating Systems: Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista.
Memory (RAM): At least 128 MB (the more the better)
Available Space on the Good Device: Enough space to save the recovered data; for example, if you expect to recover 40 MB lost data, the Good Device should have at least 40 MB free space (and even more if you plan to take the Host Computer as the Good Device).
Data Recovery Wizard will find almost any type of deleted file. If your file is not listed in "File View" of the results screen, check "Folder View" or use the Filter button to filter search results.
